Course objectives

To build on the basic knowledge gained on our own introductory course or elsewhere, to enable the delegates to understand the various functions that collectively make up the operations (back office) of investment banks, asset management firms, custodians and hedge funds.

Who should attend?

The course is structured specifically for people working in human resources, human capital management, recruitment and consultancy where the deeper understanding will enable the delegates to both better sell their services to financial services firms and better source and recommend candidates for operations roles.

Course structure

Held in the heart of the City, this half day course is an interactive, lecture-based programme.

The course includes:

      Introduction
    • What is operations?
    • A brief reminder of the activities of the buy and sell sides and the characteristics of shares and bonds
    • Broad outline of corporate actions
    • Trade characteristics and roles
    • Exchange traded where clearing and settlement is organised by the Exchange,
      Equities (LCH.Clearnet and Crest)
      Some bonds (clean and dirty prices)
      Derivatives (and margin)
    • Over the counter, where clearing and settlement can be more involved, with example roles attached to each area
      Foreign exchange (CLS Bank)
      Eurobonds (ICMA and Trax2)
      Swaps (ISDA agreements)
      Credit derivatives (ISDA agreements)
    • Settlement processes and roles
    • Fund Management
    • Operations for authorised funds
      Long only such as OEICs and Unit Trusts

      Issue and redemption
      Example roles
